Walk down the cleaning aisle of any grocery store and you'll find the same thing on every shelf: bright green scouring pads, wrapped in more plastic, made of plastic, and headed for a landfill when you're done with them. We got tired of that math. So we built something different.
Curious what most kitchen sponges are really made of? We break it down in Is Your Sponge Secretly Made of Plastic?
It starts with a gourd, not a barrel of oil
Our loofah scrub sponges aren't a synthetic approximation of a natural material — they're the real thing. Loofah is a fibrous gourd, grown and harvested much like a vegetable, then cleaned and shaped into a scrubber that's naturally textured enough to break down grease and grime without a single strand of plastic mesh. No bleach, no dyes, nothing added. When you're done with it, it's compostable in 30 days in your compost bin or your city's compost collection, if your program accepts it. Plastic-free, non-toxic, chemical-free, no guilt.
What USDA Certified Biobased actually means
We didn't want to just say our loofah sponges are plant-based — we wanted a third party to verify it. That's why our loofah scrub sponges and their packaging are USDA Certified Biobased under the USDA BioPreferred Program, which verifies a product's biobased content through lab testing, not marketing copy. You can look them up yourself in the USDA BioPreferred catalog. In plain terms: when we say our loofah is plant-based, it's been independently verified.
From one loofah to a full kitchen lineup
What started as a single natural scrub sponge has grown into a full plastic-free kitchen lineup: our Natural Loofah Dish Sponges for everyday dishes, Natural XL Loofah Scrub Sponges for heavy-duty pots and pans, and our Cellulose Kitchen Sponges, plant-based and plastic-free, for wiping counters and glassware. So you've always got the right tool without reaching for a plastic pad out of habit. And when you're done with a loofah sponge, it goes in the compost, not a landfill.
