Our loofah gourds are grown on farms, then harvested, dried, and stripped down to their natural fiber skeleton — the same plant fiber people have used to scrub with for centuries, long before plastic existed.
No synthetic foam. No petroleum. No factory line. Just a plant, doing what it already does.
Why we started this
The idea behind Scrub & Throw started with a simple frustration: the average kitchen sponge is designed to outlive everyone in the house — synthetic, plastic-cored, and headed for a landfill it'll sit in for centuries. It began as a search for what nature already figured out — a plant that grows into its own scrubbing texture, needs nothing added, and goes right back into the soil when it's done. Today, we carry that same rule forward: if it can't compost, it doesn't belong in your kitchen.
From your sink back to the earth
When a Scrub & Throw sponge wears out, it doesn't go in the trash — it goes in the compost. It's plant fiber, so it breaks back down into the soil it came from. No microplastics left behind, no landfill footprint added.

Scrub & Throw is a family-run, independently owned business based in Florida. We sell natural loofah and cellulose kitchen sponges here and in our Amazon store.
Our credentials
- USDA Certified Biobased: loofah sponges. Certified through the USDA BioPreferred Program (product ID 70921).
- USDA Certified Biobased: packaging. Our recyclable cardboard packaging is certified too (product ID 70923).
- Independent lab testing. Biobased content was measured by Beta Analytic using the ASTM D6866 radiocarbon method. See how we tested.
